Bad news today… Too much talk, not enough action is what the latest carbon emission data is telling us. Worldwide carbon emissions grew 2.5 percent last year. We are not only dumping harmful amounts of carbon dioxide into the air, we are INCREASING the amount we dump from 9.7 billion tons in 2006 to 9.94 billion tons in 2007. Without real, tangible policy changes, and committed energy reform we continue on a disastrous course.

Pre industrial revolution CO2 levels were at 280ppm (parts per million). “James Hansen, the National Aeronautic and Space Administration’s top climate change scientist, has said maintaining a level above 350 is dangerous, meaning emissions need to be drawn down.” Current CO2 levels are at 383ppm.

Our current economic crisis and subsequent bailout concerns are indicative of our prevailing short-term thinking. So is the climate crisis. The difference is that by the time we see the climate equivalent of a Bear Stern/ AIG failure, no act of congress will be capable of turning the ship.

The majority of carbon remains in the atmosphere for at least 150 years after its release. We need to look at the climate “accounting” our scientists are providing us. We need to step in as effective “managers” to turn this company around with more responsible practices or we are complacent in the failure of the “company”.
