Baristanet Article :: Weather and Climate Change

A nice article in Baristanet in advance of our viewing party Sept 15th.

excerpt:
A single storm — even one as big and bad as Hurricane Irene — doesn’t prove anything. But two years of extreme weather is the beginning of a pattern, says Monclair native Greg Mattison, and it’s making people wake up to the issue of climate change. “People are starting to say, ‘I’ve never seen anything like this in my lifetime,’” Mattison says. Even close by, he says, major Passaic River flooding used to be a 5-10 year event; now it’s “at least once if not two or three times a year.”

24 Hours of Reality Viewing Party :: Sept 15th, 2011

Come to my 24 Hours of Reality Watch Party RSVP Here: http://forms.climaterealityproject.org/page/event/detail/4v5h9

In light of our recent severe storms I thought many of you might find an upcoming event at our local Firehouse both timely and interesting.

We will be hosting a viewing party for the conclusion of Climate Reality.com’s “24 Hours of Reality” on Thursday Sept 15th at 7pm sharp. The program will begin with a 50 minute live webstream presentation about how climate change is effecting global weather patterns around the world. A community discussion will follow.

Montclair has been designated as a Climate Showcase Community by the U.S. EPA, and the “It’s In Our Power” Campaign is helping the entire town to reduce our energy use and lower our greenhouse gas emissions. At the Climate Reality event we will have information about simple steps residents can take and financial incentives that are now available to help them save money, make their home more comfortable, save energy, and shrink their carbon footprint – just in time for the winter heating season!

Montclair’s Environmental Coordinator, Gray Russell will be on hand to answer questions, as will both Connie and I. Many of you know that in addition to “Green By Design” and “Newlygreens” Connie and I have presented for Climate Reality for several years.

For 24 hours starting on Sept 14th and leading up to the Firehouse event Sept 15th, each hour, in every time zone around the globe, people living with the reality of climate change will connect the dots between recent extreme weather events – including floods, droughts and storms – and the man-made pollution that is changing our climate, via presentations carried live on http://www.Climate Reality.com. It will offer a round-the-clock, round-the-globe snapshot of the climate crisis in real time.

Hope to see you there.

When:
> Thursday, Sept 15th
> 7:00PM (sharp) – 8:00PM
Address:
> Montclair Fire Department Headquarters
> 1 Pine Street

What would you say to the Pope?

These are challenging times to be sure but I have some news I think speaks to what is possible if we commit to sincere action.
As time is short I will open with a humble request that requires your action by Tuesday Nov. 24th.  Please send a letter of support addressed to Pope Benedict using this form (http://bit.ly/popetocopenhagen) expressing the desire for the Pope to enter the discussion of responding to Climate Change.
Below is an explanation of what is going on.

Our friend (and past guest), Stuart Scott has an audience with the the Pope, Pope Benedict, this Wednesday Nov.25th where he will be encouraging his eminence to take a firm position on Climate Change by asking him to attend the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen Denmark in December.  This is where world leaders are meeting to determine the course of our response to climate change over the next decade.  Stuart’s journey began about a month ago when he felt a calling to ask the Pope to get involved in solving climate change.  He had the vision to get on a plane to Italy and undertake a 209km pilgrimage from Assisi to the Vatican figuring the namesake of St. Francis of Assisi would be an appropriate place to start his quest (St Francis is known as the patron saint of animals and the environment).  He left with nothing but good intentions, no commitments, no guarantees.  After negotiating through a half dozen gate-keepers, this Wednesday Stuart will personally hand deliver an invitation from UN Climate Secretary Yvo de Boer,as well as the the email responses he gets from us, directly to the Pope as part of the audience he has been granted.  This is no joke.  If you have something you would like to say to the Pope, now is your chance.  Thank you for your time.
If you want to know more about Stuart’s work we will have him on the radio show talking about his work with the Interdenominational Climate Commitment in December.  Also look for our interview with his compatriot in the IDCC, Rob Kinslow in two weeks.

Oct. 24th :: 350.org – Bloomfield, NJ

This Saturday I took our son to Bloomfield College where the student Green Hearts Environmental Movement was hosting a 350.org event.  Despite the rain, over 110 people came out to march and take pictures.  It was really encouraging to see such a diverse crowd of activists, adamant about committed action on climate change.  Seen here is club president and host Michael Palmieri. Also in attendance were members of the Essex Green Party, Sierra Club NJ Chapter, and The Climate Project.

Expo: Saving Our Kids, Healing Our Planet

Come to New Jersey’s First Green Children’s Health Expo….Saving Our Kids, Healing Our Planet

Sept. 12th and 13th at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)

As we all prepare for another school year, concerned parents, teachers and health care providers are asking: what more can be done to reverse the record number of children being affected by Asthma, ADHD, Autism, Allergies, Obesity, Childhood Cancers etc?. Many of us are all too familiar with these statistics:
1 in 150 children in the US are being diagnosed with Autism. In New Jersey, it is 1 in 94.
The CDC reports: 1 in 6 children have either a behavioral, neurological, or developmental condition.
Cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease in children.
Asthma has more than doubled since 1980 and is the leading chronic disease among American children.
1 in 6 children are considered overweight.
1 in 400-500 children have diabetes.
Of course we don’t have all of the answers, no one does….But on Saturday September 12th and Sunday September 13th on the campus of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) affordable and practical information on preventing and minimizing the symptoms associated with these conditions will be discussed. Seating is limited…..so don’t delay in registering to hear incredible presenters including pediatricians, nutritionists, authors and environmentalists discuss strategies for improving the health, mood, behavior and attention of our kids. Additionally, there will be dozens of green exhibits, free tastings of organic food and coffee, live music, an interactive eco-art mural, education on composting and recycling, nature crafts and much more. Linden "Clean" Coal Plant :: 8/27/09 Public Hearing

Bradley Campbell, former commissioner of the N.J. Department of
Environmental Protection, will advocate for a “clean coal” plant in
Linden, N.J. August 27 (this Thursday), 6:30 p.m., at a special
meeting of the Linden City Council. (Meeting details below.)

Since 2006, Mr. Campbell, a lawyer, has been representing a small
Massachusetts firm that now wants to build a large 500-megaWatt coal
power plant in Linden (Union County).

The experimental plant would capture up to 90% of its own carbon
dioxide (CO2), and would gather CO2 from other sources in the area,
compress it into a liquid, pipe it 70 miles offshore, and pump it a
half-mile beneath the floor of the Atlantic ocean, hoping it would
stay there forever.

Over its 50-year lifetime the Linden coal plant would bury 10 million
tons of CO2 per year beneath the Atlantic, for a total of 500
million tons (a trillion pounds).

The proposal has generated great interest from the environmental
community in New Jersey. Some are asking, “Are more coal plants
really the best way to reduce global warming?”

A fact sheet about the proposed “clean coal” plant is available online
at http://tinyurl.com/mac485. Sources of information for the fact
sheet are available here: http://tinyurl.com/lmgqfv .

The meeting in Linden August 27 is open to the public.

The location is the second-floor Council Caucus room in the rear of
Linden City Hall, 301 North Wood Ave, Linden, NJ 07036.

If many people show up to hear Mr. Campbell promote “clean coal,” the
meeting will be moved to Council Chambers, 2nd floor front, in the
same building.
