<itunes:summary>Hi Everyone,
Happy New Year. Â Sorry, no Podcasts this month. We'll be back in Feb.
We’re taking some time off from the show for the holidays but the work goes on…

Being environmentally conscious, active members of the green community, I am writing to ask for your feedback from the streets, and for your input.

While we did not end 2009 with the decisive treaty we were all hoping for from Copenhagen, if nothing else we should draw motivation from the failure, approaching 2010 with greater vigor in crafting new strategies and tactics that inspire a more carbon neutral culture. Â To this ends...

This Sunday 1/10/10 Connie and I will be attending the Northeast Regional Roundtable for The Climate Project (http://www.theclimateproject.org/) in NYC.  We will be meeting with the directors of TCP to discuss the direction of the organization and how we can be of the most service in 2010 and beyond.  I’m asking for your feedback so that we can make good use of this opportunity to refine the organization’s strategy.

TCP has been an informational organization coordinating lectures on the realities of Climate Change and the underlying science. Â To date more than 5 million people have seen our lectures, the question is, is this enough? Â Since we are not yet living sustainably, I'd argue no, it is not enough.

Please consider the following questions.

How could your organization benefit from TCP resources?

What services can we provide businesses, schools, municipalities and individuals?

Is there a way to apply TCP manpower and connections to facilitate action and implement solutions as opposed to just heralding the problems?

In your observations, what specifically is missing for people in tackling this issue?

What barriers do people have to implementing carbon reduction modifications?

Who should we be going after with our educational campaign, how do we reach them, how do we frame the discussion so they will hear the message?

We welcome any input you may have about how to apply our network of 3000 worldwide volunteers backed by Mr. Gore and world scientists to the challenge of changing the way we consume, provide energy, farm, eat, build, live, grow... In short, exist.  Please be as specific and candid as you can, I look forward to hearing from you all.  ***RESPOND HERE*** (../../../../../../../contact.php)

Thanks for Listening, Keep Thinkin’ Green.

		<itunes:summary>

Since the holidays are upon us and many of us will have some time off to celebrate and reflect, our tip this week is a simple one: expand your cultural and religious knowledge.

Those of us that don't practice Judaism could learn a thing or two by going to a shul or a temple or a synagogue with our Jewish friends.

Our Muslim friends can teach us about their beliefs by taking us to their mosque.

Protestants can learn from Greek Orthodox Christians

and Roman Catholics can learn from Buddhists

and Hindus can learn from Jains

and atheists can learn from everyone!

We're not saying we should all go get ourselves converted. My religion is my business. But by learning about the beliefs and traditions of our friends and neighbors, we can all come to a better understanding about each other.

One thing the UN negotiations help to demonstrate is that ignorance can easily lead to intolerance, but understanding can quickly lead to cooperation, and cooperation is the first thing we need in order to achieve true sustainability.

So we're going to take an afternoon over the holidays to get outside our comfort zone and expand some understanding.

Thanks to everyone for listening. We too must take our holiday break, but never fear! The Morning Blend Newlygreens Edition will return in late January. As always, we'll have show notes and podcasts of what you heard today up on newlygreens.com as well as blog posts and other sustainable info.

Keep listening to Brave New Radio WP 88.7FM!</itunes:summary>

Today's Stories:
Wind Farm Goes Underwater (In a Good Way)
Sarkozy and Brown Hold Hands on Transaction Tax
Solar Panels Now Even More Efficient
New Energy Possibilities for New York
Pope Benedict XVI Acknowledges Climate Change Crisis

Wind Farm Goes Underwater (In a Good Way)

http://cleantechnica.com/2009/12/15/london-calling-nexans-to-supply-undersea-cable-for-worlds-largest-wind-farm/

The world's largest wind farm still in the process of being built, the London Array, is taking another step towards completion. The project, which is being installed in the Thames (Tehms) Estuary, has just signed a 100 million euro contract with global cablers Nexans to supply the high voltage undersea power cables that will transmit power from the array to the U.K. grid.

The London Array, all told, will house up to 341 turbines and generate up to 1,000 megawatts of electricity.  That is enough wind power to supply 750,000 homes or about a quarter of Greater London. The deal just agreed upon will mean Nexans will supply a total of four submarine power cables for the London Array, each about 54 kilometers long.

Sarkozy and Brown Hold Hands on Transaction Tax

http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/010885.html

UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and French President Nicolas Sarkozy have jointly proposed a global financial transaction tax or Tobin tax, the proceeds of which would go towards the halting of global warming. This statement comes in response to the European Union commitment of €2.4bn a year from January to immediately help the world's poor countries cope with climate change.

In a world whose leaders are attempting to learn from its recent economic crisis, the idea of a Tobin tax has been gaining support. Stability and accountability are big factors under consideration as the leaders of European nations feel pressure from their constituents to come to an agreement on climate action, and a properly executed Tobin tax could potentially provide both.

So far, England has pledged the most funding to poorer countries facing climate change, with France and Germany making slightly smaller pledges. The EU also emphasised its willingness to increase its target for cutting greenhouse gases 30% by 2020, if the rest of the world signs up to a sufficiently ambitious package in Copenhagen. The EU is currently committed to 20% cuts by 2020.

Solar Panels Now Even More Efficient

http://www.ecogeek.org/component/content/article/3016

Scientists at Tel Aviv University unwittingly came up with a breakthrough in nano-technology with sustainable applications recently, while trying to work on a cure for Alzheimer's. Sufferers of Alzheimer's have been shown to have a particular peptide found in the plaques that form in their brains, and the researchers found a way to get peptides to self-assemble in a vacuum.

Why is this significant? Because the resulting arrangement of peptides acts as a dust- and water-repelling coating. This isn't very helpful for a human brain, however it is helpful if used to coat solar panels. Not only can the coating keep solar panels clear from debris, but it also could be used as a supercapacitor, meaning better lithium batteries.

Alzheimer's research will continue at Tel Aviv University, but it's not certain who will pick up funding for the solar panel applications of their research.

New Energy Possibilities for New York

http://greeninc.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/12/14/bloomberg-eyes-danish-offshore-wind-farm-and-sees-new-yorks-future/

Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York City, is considering using wind turbines to help power his city. The turbines, which have been proposed to be located several miles off the shores of Long Island, would provide less than 1 percent of New York's energy, based on the planned distribution: 350 megawatts to Long Island, and 350 megawatts to New York City.

However, the mayor has conceded that it's not just one effort that will help the city to become more sustainable and less wasteful.</itunes:summary>

Our guest today is a leader in the world of faith-based responses to climate change. He has logged many miles traveling the world educating people about the realities of climate change and campaigning for personal involvement. He is the Director of the Interfaith Declaration on Climate Change and a fellow presenter with the Climate Project, welcome to Newlygreens on the Morning Blend, Stuart Scott.

More about his work can be found on the site for the Interfaith Declaration on Climate Change (http://www.interfaithdeclaration.org/)

In this interview Stuart gives us an inside look at the Copenhagen conference. A more personal report than that of the main stream media.

He has been impressed by the statements of the leaders from low-lying countries like Tuvalu and the Malidives who will be the first to feel the effects of rising sea level.

"We live in constant fear of the adverse impacts of climate change. For a coral atoll nation, sea level rise and more severe weather events loom as a growing threat to our entire population. The threat is real and serious, and is of no difference to a slow and insidious form of terrorism against us."

-Saufatu Sopoanga, Prime Minister of Tuvalu, at the 58th Session of the United Nations General Assembly New York, 24th September 2003

Tuvalu is one of the places on earth that is most vulnerable to the affects of global warming. The threat of sea level rise may bring complete disaster to the 10,000 Tuvaluans residing on nine extremely low-lying coral atolls.

For the first time ever, leading international scientists have drawn up a report on the status of the parts of the world covered by snow and ice. The conclusion is that they are disappearing faster than anticipated. The report was presented in Copenhagen by former US vice president Al Gore. See the comments by Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs and chairman of the Arctic Council, Per Stig Møller and by Kuupik Kleist, prime minister of Greenland.

Mr. Gore said, "I wish that I had the words to transfer directly from my heart to yours the passion that I feel for this issue. For me, it raises a fundamental question: Who are we as human beings? Who are we?
If at some future date, the next generation faces the prospect of living in a world with steadily deteriorating prospects and no chance to reclaim the glories of this beautiful earth that we have enjoyed — if they look back at Copenhagen and ask, "Why didn't you act? Why did you let this process fall into paralysis, and neither succeed or fail but become a symbol of futility? What were the arguments were again? You didn't realize that we were at stake?"
Watch a clip of Mr. Gore's speech here (http://cpaf.repoweramerica.org/agcop15.):

Stuart is now coordinating a high profile web conference with renown leaders from around the world for Sunday April 18th, 2009.  If you would like to be more involved you can reach him through Twitter his user name is "StuartGaia (http://twitter.com/#search?q=StuartGaia)"</itunes:summary>

Our guest today is volunteer for The Climate Project and lifelong resident of NJ. She is working to arrange a vigil this Friday Dec 11 to draw attention to the climate negotiations in Copenhagen  that began this past Monday.

Also, candlelight vigils are being planned on Dec. 11 and 12 with the help of 350.org for solidarity re: Copenhagen.  You can get more information at 350.org (http://www.350.org/vigil) I encourage you all to plan a vigil or if you can, attend the one I'm organizing in Asbury Park on Friday, December 11th from 6-7 PM on the Boardwalk at 5th and Ocean Avenues.  Below is the message I'm sending out if you want to share it with anyone or use part of it for your own action.

Another Vigil  is planned in our area at Bloomfield Post Office December 12th

The Essex Greens will be holding a vigil from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 12th, in front of the main Bloomfield Post Office at the corner of Bloomfield Avenue and Montgomery St.

December 11th and 12th are worldwide days of action taking place during the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. 192 nations are meeting there from Dec. 7-Dec. 18 to try to come to an agreement on a new treaty to take stronger action to reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that are dangerously heating up the atmosphere.

Thousands of actions around the world will be happening on December  11th and 12th, coordinated by several international networks. More information can be found at Tick Tick Tick (http://www.tcktcktck.org.)

_____________________________________________

Katie's letter to Friends, Neighbors, and Family,

People and places I love are in danger. There is a threat looming, climate change, and there are places all around the world that are already experiencing the effects. But we have an opportunity! It is time for the United States to take a leadership role in Copenhagen at the UN negotiations this December. I hope that the country with the most responsibility, and with the most capability to lead the world, will reverse direction and be a leader, rather than an obstacle, to international action on climate change. We need clean and secure energy for our future.

Please join me to gather peacefully in a candlelight vigil on the Boardwalk at 5th and Ocean Avenues in Asbury Park from 6-7 PM on Friday, December 11th. Together we will express our concern of the threat of climate change. Bring candles, LED lights or flashlights, menorahs, or whatever you can find, to show your support.  Please forward this to whomever you think may be interested in attending.  You can get more information at Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/events.php?ref=sb#/event.php?eid=199909563712&index=1 and http://www.350.org/node/13115)

These vigils are part of a weekend of climate action organized with 350.org and TckTckTck.org -- a moment for people all over the world to gather at iconic locations in their communities, and light candles of hope to stand in solidarity with the citizens of the nations whose very survival is threatened by the climate crisis. Thousands of these actions are planned worldwide. We will support the call for commitments by the developed world to cut emissions enough to reduce the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases.

Come participate on the evening of December 11th or organize your own vigil. Tell us what is concerning you about climate change. Play music, read poetry, read letters to politicians! The speech made by President Mohammed Nasheed of the Maldives at the Climate Vulnerable Forum will be read aloud. Spread the word to your friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family to come be a part of this vigil. If you can, walk or bike to the Asbury Boardwalk, and take action to send a message to our leadership and the rest of the world. We can solve the climate crisis, and we need to do it now.

Thank you!</itunes:summary>

		<itunes:summary>

As the temperature drops and the holidays approach, you may be thinking about getting the old fireplace going. But before you do that, you of course need to get some wood. So here are a few tips:

Check out the wood before purchasing it. The wetter the wood, the more smoke and carbon dioxide it will emit. You'll also pay up to 25% more when you take into account water weight. The easiest way to gauge if wood is reasonably dry is through sound. Rap on a sample piece with your knuckles. Dry wood should make a hollower sound whereas green wood will make more of a dull thumping sound.

Instead of buying or collecting wood, consider wood pellets. These are generally made from compacted sawdust and are a byproduct of milling operations. Given their density and low moisture content, they have excellent combustion efficiency, burning very cleanly.

If you feel like being a mountain man (or a mountain woman), you can collect your own wood. But here are a few things to keep in mind:

Only collect on your own property unless you check with your local government about where you can collect without getting in trouble.

Beware of chopping down or cutting up dead or fallen trees as they often become habitats for local creatures who help to balance the ecosystem of your area. In addition, some of those creatures help to decompose the wood which contributes to more fertile soil. It's very important not to disrupt their work!

A word on so-called Chimney-Sweeping Logs: Don't use them! They are marketed to clean creosote out of your chimney, but they only work on creosote that has become glazed to the walls of your chimney, the most rare form of creosote residue to occur in chimneys. And even if this occurs and the logs break down the creosote, the residue still collects somewhere in your fireplace or chimney until you take the time to physically remove it.

Creosote and tar do build up in your fireplace and do need to be removed, but only trust a licensed professional to mechanically removed this buildup.

It's not worth the money to get a fake log that is full of potentially harmful chemicals. A better investment might be a professionally-installed steel lining, which is much harder for creosote to build up on and therefore much less of a fire hazard.

Bottom line: chimney-sweeping logs do not in fact sweep your chimney. Don't believe the hype!</itunes:summary>

Headlines:
EPA Regulates Carbon
Inhofe Shows His Ignorance
Gorillas in the Midst
UK Gets with the Climate Program
Tidal Power in Oregon
Coke Reduces it's Footprint

Well Played, EPA (http://cleantechnica.com/2009/12/06/epa-wields-timely-stick-ruling-co2-a-public-danger-before-copenhagen-climate-decision/)

In a bold move well timed to coincide with the US Climate Summit decision at Copenhagen,  the EPA has declared carbon dioxide a “Public Danger” - - triggering the certainty of regulation for big greenhouse gas emitters such as power stations, cement kilns, crude-oil refineries and chemical plants.

Jim Inhofe, Senator from Oklahoma, is going to Copenhagen with some of his politician friends, a posse he is calling the "truth squad", to boycott the Climate Change summit and make a general nuisance of himself.

But with the EPA essentially demanding legislation by naming CO2 a Public Danger, Senator Inhofe and all the other Congressmen who take money from fossil fuel lobbyists are much less likely to make a dent at the Summit.

Gorillas and Humans BFF Again (http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/010843.html)

Years of protecting the mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwest Uganda nearly unraveled four years ago when gorillas began to destroy farm crops outside the reserve. Villagers in Nkuringo, located outside the Bwindi boundary, quickly turned against the endangered species.

Recently, in an effort to stave off the possibility of gorilla killings, villagers and wildlife officials have partnered up to ensure that the community receives economic benefits for helping to conserve Bwindi's mountain gorillas. The agreement has furthered efforts to ensure the apes' safety and could serve as a model for protecting gorillas across central Africa.

320 individuals, about half of the wild global gorilla population, live in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and they are resting a bit easier now thanks to those that care about them, and those that actually live with them.

Oregon Making Waves to Make Energy (http://www.ecogeek.org/component/content/article/3012)

Within two years, barring any unforeseen problems, the first wave power station will be up and fully operational off the coast of Oregon, generating about 1.5 Megawatts of energy.

Wave power company Ocean Power Technologies just signed a contract with Oregon Iron Works to start building buoys which harness the energy produced by waves. If all goes well with these first ten buoys, Ocean Power Technologies might get the go ahead to create a 200-buoy project in the area.

The project's success could mean great things for the future of wave power in America.  Studies have shown that wave power could power the world twice over. More on that as the project progresses.

UK Prime Minister Lays the Smack Down on Climate Change Haters (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/6729833/Gordon-Brown-climate-change-sceptics-are-flat-earthers.html)

Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, launched an outspoken attack on climate-change skeptics amid growing signs of public doubts about the scientific and political consensus on the environment, insisting that the science on climate change was settled, and accusing those who questioned the consensus of being outdated.

He said: "With only days to go before Copenhagen we mustn't be distracted by the behind-the-times, anti-science, flat-earth climate skeptics. We know the science. We know what we must do.”

Climate skeptics around the world are using the crisis to argue that man made global warming is not proven and therefore there is no need for a deal to curb greenhouse gas emissions or pay to help poor countries adapt.

Our guest today is the owner of Green Living Solutions (http://www.greenlivingsolutionsnj.com/), an obvious fit for Newlygreens on the Morning Blend.  The company specializes in energy audits but they can also go much farther to actually consulting on sustainable living.  He is going to talk to us today about some of the things our listeners can do to save some money and some of the great programs available to the residents of NJ.  Welcome to Newlygreens on the morning blend, Ed Schwartz.

For more information about arranging a home energy audit I recommend visiting the Home Performance with Energy Star for Homes site (http://www.njcleanenergy.com/residential/programs/home-performance-energy-star/home-performance-energy-star-r).  Here you can find certified contractors and auditors like Ed.

The process starts with an energy audit.  This qualifies you for the State incentive package; currently up to 50% back on home energy improvements, up to $10,000 back ($20,000 in improvements).  In addition there are up to $2500 in federal incentives for efficiency.  An additional 30% rebate on the installation of qualifying renewable energy installations is also available.

You can contact Ed here:Â (201) 390-4280
info@greenlivingsolutionsnj.com (mailto:info@greenlivingsolutionsnj.com)

Questions discussed in this episode:
What is an energy audit?

How are residential audits different from industrial or educational audits?

What are some of the most common things you find in your walk throughs?

Is this something people have to repeat?

Health and safety is a big part of what you look at, have you surprised anyone with what you have found?

What incentives are currently available to people at the state and then at the federal level?

How do people get started in the program?

You have a really nicely put together website with some good introductory information.  On of the things I noticed was a few top ten energy and sustainable tips lists.  Would you like to share one of your top ten lists with our listeners?  More of Green Living Solutions top 10 lists in this week's Green Sprouts Episode.</itunes:summary>

Our Green Sprouts tips come to us today coutesy of Green Living Solutions.  You can find more Top 10 Green Tip Lists on their site (http://www.greenlivingsolutionsnj.com/save_energy/top_energy_savings_tips.htm)
Save Energy, $ave Money, Save the Planet
Top Ten Holiday Tips for Sustainability

Use low wattage or LED Holiday lights
This goes for Christmas tree lights, Menorah lights, window candle lights and exterior decorative
lights. A timer will limit the amount of time lights are on to reduce energy.

Consider a live Christmas tree
A live, potted tree adds ambiance, and is less of a fire hazard. Your family could also plant it after the
holidays. An artificial tree could be used repeatedly without needing to cut down real trees. At a
minimum, you can shred your live tree and use it as mulch.

It is okay to “re-gift”
It is always a wonderful feeling to give a gift. If you donate to a charity, you could get a tax benefit!
Alternatively, return gifts that you will not use to the store. It is a shame to have these items sit in your
closet for years, only to be thrown away, or end up in a garage sale.

Donate “Gently Used” items to local charitable organizations
Books, video games, toys, coats, clothing, and other items could travel from home to home, and
make many children happy. This reduces the need to make more toys (using additional resources),
and keeps them from ending up in a landfill.

Carpool Shopping Trips
You can save time and gas by carpooling with neighbors, friends, or even combining multiple
shopping destinations into a single trip.

Shop locally
No need to travel to a store or mall many miles away, there are always options closer to home.

Minimize the use of wrapping paper and packaging
Minimize your use of bubble wrap, styrofoam, and cardboard boxes while wrapping your gifts or
packages.  Be creative!  Use newspaper to wrap packages and it can be recycled afterward.

Recycle cans and bottles after your Holiday party
This is environmentally sound, reduces resources needed for virgin materials, saves your town
money on solid waste removal costs, increases their revenue for recycled material, and keeps the
material out of landfill.  And besides... IT's THE LAW!!!

Close the flue.
Be sure to close the flue to your fireplace after the fire and all the embers are burnt out. More times
than not, fireplace flues are left open, which allows heat to escape the house at a surprising rate.

Minimize the use of space heaters.
Have your heating system serviced properly, and make sure it can handle your heating needs. Space
heaters use a lot more electricity, cost a small fortune to run, and could be a fire hazard.

Download a PDF of this list. (http://www.greenlivingsolutionsnj.com/images/top_10_holiday_sustainable_tips.pdf)

Have a wonderful Holiday Season and
good luck in making our planet a better place for your family!

Last week we talked a little bit about Thanksgiving, but we have a few extra tips to make your Thanksgiving or any Holiday celebration a little greener:

1 Use cloth napkins instead of disposable ones. Not only will you save trees, but you get to feel all fancy like when you eat at an expensive restaurant.

2 Make a statement about reducing waste by buying products with the least amount of packaging. If two competing companies want to make a profit this season, make sure you reward the one that uses less to get you what you need.

3 Bring the thermostat down a few degrees from what it would normally be. Between the cooking you're doing and all the extra family members who will be gracing your home with their presence, you'll be generating plenty of heat without throwing the radiator into the mix.

4 If you are going to another person's house to celebrate Thanksgiving, try and carpool with your other relatives, especially the relatives that drive a hybrid car!</itunes:summary>

In addition to a few ways to green your Thanksgiving we offer this thought from Dr. King...

"I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a "thing-oriented" society to a "person-oriented" society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered."Â (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - April 4, 1967 (exactly one year before his assassination)

http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/45a/058.html

"A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our past and present policies. n the one hand we are called to play the good Samaritan on life's roadside; but that will be only an initial act. One day we must come to see that the whole Jericho road must be transformed so that men and women will not be constantly beaten and robbed as they make their journey on life's highway. True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring. A true revolution of values will soon look uneasily on the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth. With righteous indignation, it will look across the seas and see individual capitalists of the West investing huge sums of money in Asia, Africa and South America, only to take the profits out with no concern for the social betterment of the countries, and say: "This is not just." It will look at our alliance with the landed gentry of Latin America and say: "This is not just." The Western arrogance of feeling that it has everything to teach others and nothing to learn from them is not just. A true revolution of values will lay hands on the world order and say of war: "This way of settling differences is not just." This business of burning human beings with napalm, of filling our nation's homes with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate into veins of people normally humane, of sending men home from dark and bloody battlefields physically handicapped and psychologically deranged, cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice and love. A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death. "</itunes:summary>

		<itunes:summary>

Subtract Meat, Save the Planet (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article6891362.ece)

Risa told you so, but now the UK Times confirms it. Lord Stern, a former chief economist of the World Bank and now I. G. Patel Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics,  said: “Meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the world’s resources. A vegetarian diet is better.”

Direct emissions of methane from cows and pigs is a significant source of greenhouse gases. Methane is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas.

Lord Stern, the author of the influential 2006 Stern Review on the cost of tackling global warming, said that a successful deal at the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December would lead to soaring costs for meat and other foods that generate large quantities of greenhouse gases. Which is bad for the meat industry, but good for the planet and also good for the health of everyone who cuts down on their meat intake.

Essentially, people will need to cut down a lot on eating meat if not going full-blown vegetarian if the world is to conquer climate change. There are plenty of meat substitutes out there. But before you say "They'll never be as good as the real thing, so I won't eat them," consider that quality is forced to improve as demand increases. So the less meat you eat, the better non-meat dishes will have to become. Bon appetit!

350 Makes an Impact!

The 350 Day of Climate Action, "biggest day of climate action (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/21/350orgs-international-day_n_329271.html) in the history of the world" according to the Huffington Post was a powerful act of solidarity for the various incarnations of the Green movement across the US and the world. The event, which took place on October 24th, was created to show the world's leaders that there is a global movement for them to come to an agreement on a carbon emissions treaty at the UN Climate talks in Copenhagen in December.

350.org as we reported in a previous show, is named after the number that scientists think is upper level of parts per million of safe carbon dioxide in the atmosphere -- we have already passed this number, making action all the more critical.

Across the world, different groups of protesters did different things to make their feelings felt. In Hong Kong, they stopped traffic and took of their shirts.

In Tel Aviv 350 roller skaters took to the streets.

In Australia they formed a "350" in umbrellas in front of the Sydney Opera House.

In Mexico City they formed a "350" inside a flower with their bodies.

In South Africa they hung banners off the sides of cliffs.

In Istanbul they bounced a beachball Earth on a giant rainbow flag.

In Peru, they danced down the streets dressed as clowns.

In California, they gathered in front of the famous Hollywood sign and added a 350 sign underneath.

And off the coast of Barcelona, a Green Peace ship flew the flag of 350.

You can check out the other ways various nations across the world showed their support of Climate Action by visiting 350.org.

Wyoming Comes in Last (http://greeninc.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/27/wyoming-governor-says-efficiency-is-a-local-or-federal-issue-but-not-a-state-one/)

According to the New York Times, Wyoming, the state that is among the nation’s top producers of coal and oil, has consistently ranked dead last (http://greeninc.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/21/maine-rhode-island-rise-in-efficiency-ranks/) in state rankings for energy efficiency, even though its governor, Dave Freudenthal (http://www.nytimes.com/ref/washington/raceprofile_WYOMINGGOV.html), acknowledges the area as “low-hanging fruit.”

“We’re not a state that’s going to do building codes,” he said. And as for appliance standards he said, “My guess is that the appliance standards will all turn out to be federal.”

So essentially,</itunes:summary>

HOW TO REVERSE TRICK-OR-TREAT!

• Go trick-or-treating door-to-door in your neighborhood, as you normally would.
• At each household you visit, after the kids receive candy from the adult at the doorstep, one of the children with
your group gives one of the informational cards/chocolates to the household while saying one of the lines
on the page for kids that follows.

Help your kids practice handing an informational card/chocolate to an adult and what they will say, especially if
your kids are young. Here are some possibilities:
o Thank you' Here is a piece of Fair Trade chocolate for you
o Here is a card about how to end child slavery on cocoa farms
o Here is a card on how you can help end poverty for cocoa farming families
o Here is a card about how you can help cocoa farmers afford school for their kids
3. Read the Fair Trade Cocoa Book to your kids (at www.reversetrickottreating.org (http://www.reversetrickottreating.org)), to help your kids understand
social justice and environmental issues in the cocoa industry, and the significance of what they are doing when
Reverse Trick-or-Treating. A list of frequently asked questions for adults is also available on the website.
4. Optional: Print out Reverse Trick-or-Treating bag label at www.reversetrickortreating.org (http://www.reversetrickottreating.org). The label is designed
to be attached to a grocery bag, so you can carry the Reverse Trick-or-Treating cards.

		<itunes:summary>

Barbara and Daniel spent the last three years traveling throughout the tri-state area filming Unlimited. Their first major documentary, Unlimited is a work of passion for both of them. It is both a personal response to An Inconvenient Truth and a call to action to America's youth to step up and lead the country where our politicians and industry leaders have been too timid to go. They hope the film, accompanied by a Teacher's Guide, will be distributed to schools, churches, community groups and more.

In a time when the seriousness of the threat of global warming has just begun to enter the public's awareness, a pair of young producers have set out to educate people about the solutions to global warming and help move this country forward on the issue of renewable energy. Joining us today are Barbara Azzoli and Daniel Califf-Glick of OneLight OneCamera Productions (http://www.OneLightOneCamera.com). Together they have produced "Unlimited" a 30 minute documentary that gives some insight into how our energy landscape is changing.

G: Barbara, why produce a documentary on renewable energy?

C: Daniel, what is the basic premise behind the movie?

R: Children as environmentalists - it's a great concept!

R: What would you say to people who might tell you you're brainwashing students and the adults around them are just feeding them propaganda?

C: In the classroom there is something to be said for kids hearing lessons from other kids. Do you have any feedback from teachers as to how the movie is being received? And what information the kids who watch are retaining?

R: Do these kids really understand what they're talking about?

G: There are times in the movie when the kids are making a case for something. Like the economic justification of renewables for example. I did come away from that thinking, "What does a 10 year old really know about market economics?" I understand the comments about renewable energy reaching economies of scale, but to hear it from a kid sounded like someone put words in his mouth. What were you trying to demonstrate having kids talk about complicated issues like science and economic development? Barbara?

R: The concept of vertical farming was completely new to me. Who actually came up with that concept and are people actually investing in it as a real, viable option?

C: I love when the kids talk about some of the experiments they have set up, vertical farming, biomass generators and so on. Where where they doing those experiments?

R: One little girl said something that really got to me, she said "Everyone should think about the place they love most and realize if we don't stop global warming those places aren't going to be there anymore." What did the children say that really struck you?

G: What schools have added this movie to their libraries?

C: What did you learn from this experience of making this film?</itunes:summary>

Target Misses the Mark with Organic Food
Original Story (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/20/target-accused-of-organic_n_327639.html)

The Huffington Post says if you like shopping at Target, the store like Wal-mart without the sweat shops, you've no doubt had a meander through their grocery section. But if you're trying to use the store to get your organic on, you might wanna shop somewhere else.

A food watchdog group called the Cornucopia Institute has filed a formal complaint with the USDA's organic program accusing Target Corporation of organic food fraud. There is a legal difference between "natural" food and "organic" food, and apparently Target and their food suppliers have been blurring the line.

One such instance was when Target advertised Silk soyproducts as organic when Silk's manufacturer Dean Foods had shifted away from organic ingredients. This is their second milk-related organic snafu. In 2007 one of Target's milk suppliers, Aurora Organic Dairy, nearly lost their organic title. Let's hope Target gets back on track.

San Franciscans Forced to Compost and Not Bothered By It

Original Story (http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/10/mandatory-composting-law-success-san-francisco.php?dcitc=th_rss)

Just when you think San Franciscans can't get any more laid back, a new law that took effect last week mandating recycling and composting was not only started with participation, it was already being practiced before it even took effect!

From Treehugger.com we learned that since the announcement of the law earlier this year, the amount of waste collected for composting has risen from 400 to 500 tons a day. In anticipation of the law, many companies and landlords made advance arrangements, and were obeying the law before it even came to exist. The standard of living in San Fran has already gone up especially for apartment-dwellers who no longer have to smell their thrown-out food anymore.

Initially the law was passed with mixed reviews as some were worried it would infringe upon the freedom of citizens. But apparently the rights of noses not to have to smell stinky, rotting food, won out.

Coal Plants Not Smoking, But Pollution Still Exists

Original Story (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/13/us/13water.html?ref=earth)

The New York Times reports that Allegheny Energy, a coal company, came under fire a few years ago for spewing air pollution from their plants causing respiratory problems for people living nearby and acid rain and yellow powdery gunk that floated in the air and covered everything.

So what did they do? Well they installed special scrubbers to clean the air the plant emitted. Water and chemicals were sprayed through the air, grabbing harmful pollutants before they could escape into the outside world. Over 150,000 tons of pollutants a year were caught before they could hurt anybody.

But the cleaner air has come at a cost. Each day since the equipment was switched on in June, the company has dumped tens of thousands of gallons of wastewater containing chemicals from the scrubbing process into the Monongahela River, which provides drinking water to 350,000 people and flows into Pittsburgh, 40 miles to the north. So now instead of breathing in the toxins, citizens near the plant get to drink them.

This problem is not only being caused by Allegheny Energy. Many coal power plants are doing the same thing. Power plants are the nation’s biggest producer of toxic waste, surpassing industries like plastic and paint manufacturing and chemical plants. The Environmental Protection Agency projects that by next year, roughly 50 percent of coal-generated electricity in the United States will come from plants that use scrubbers or similar technologies,</itunes:summary>

Interview - Brad Campbell :: Purgen One_Part 2

Right Click for Mr. Campbell's Power Point Presentation delivered to the Linden Town Council (http://newlygreens.com/_content/uploads/Supporting_Documents_Purgen/LindenCC_1strevn2.ppt)
***UPDATE*** On Tuesday Oct 20th, the town council of Linden voted 4-7 against granting the land use request to SCS Energy.  Round 1 goes to the environmentalists.

We continue our interview with Bradley Campbell Lead Council to the proposed Purgen One CCS Coal Plant in Union, NJ

C: HIGH PROFILE ENDORSEMENT CLAIMS

I was actually in attendance for your presentation to the Linden Planning Board in Sept, and I have a couple questions about some things you said.

AL GORE

In closing you said: Al Gore someone who normally opposes coal “… has spoken publicly and favorably about this project (Purgen One).”

We contacted Mr. Gore’s office and received this statement from his Press Secretary:

"To date, Vice President Gore has not endorsed any particular CCS project.  That said, he does not oppose the research and development of CCS technology.”

They also refered us to his recent Repower America speech where he said publicly “The answer (to the climate crisis) is to end our reliance on carbon-based fuels.” Coal is a carbon-based fuel.

	* Mr. Gore supporting R&D is not the same as his supporting deployment. Mr. Gore’s office is refuting your claim that he supports this specific project. Your statements could mislead people to think leaders of the environmental movement expressly support this project when in fact they do not.  How do you respond to that?

	* The Reuters article (../../uploads/Supporting_Documents_Purgen/Reuters.com%20-%20Gore_CCS_boom_unlikely.pdf) referenced by Mr. Campbell as support for his claim of Mr. Gore's public support.  At no point in that article is Mr. Gore quoted a stating his support for this plant. To date we have been unable to find any published report of his support for this plant, and as we reported Mr. Gore’s office has stated he has not taken a position on this project.

MR. Campbell cites the support of 4 National Environmental Groups:

Clean Air Task Force (CATF) received an $845,000 grant from the Doris
Duke Charitable Foundation in 2008 to promote CCS; and a grant of
$787,500 from the Joyce Foundation in August, 2006 to promote CCS,
for a total of $1.6 million to promote CCS.

Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) received a grant of $437,500
in 2006 from the Joyce Foundation to promote CCS, and a $750,000
grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation in 2008 to study ways
to use money raised by a carbon cap-and-trade program to promote
"clean energy." The Doris Duke Foundation uses the euphemism
"clean energy" to mean coal plants with CCS. For example, see
here (http://www.ddcf.org/page.asp?pageId=675) and here. (http://www.ddcf.org/page.asp?pageId=703) Source for this information (http://www.precaution.org/lib/prn_nrdc_catf.090709.htm), NRDC CCS Policy Doc (http://newlygreens.com/_content/uploads/Supporting_Documents_Purgen/NRDC_CCS_Policy.pdf)

UCS (Union Of Concerned Scientists) - The position of the UCS as I was able to ascertain is very similar to that of the Sierra club, what I would call reluctant acceptance.  The group seems to encourage the pursuit of proven, clean, renewable energy over experimental revisions to coal consumption.

EDF (Environmental Defense Fund) (http://www.edf.org/page.cfm?tagID=337) - The EDF is not a hard line environmental group.  Their mission as stated on their site is to "partner with businesses, governments, and communities to find practical environmental solutions.

Interview - Brad Campbell :: Purgen One_Part 1
***UPDATE*** On Tuesday Oct 20th, the town council of Linden voted 4-7 against granting the land use request to SCS Energy.  Round 1 goes to the environmentalists.

This morning we have part 3 in our series on Coal energy and the battle over Purgen One (http://newlygreens.com/_content/uploads/Supporting_Documents_Purgen/SCSEnergy_AboutPurgenOne.pdf), the prototype Carbon Capture and Sequestration plant proposed for the township of Linden, in Union County NJ. In past episodes we heard from the environmental opposition, this week we hear from the Lead Council to the developer SCS Energy.

Pre Interview Set Up

To give the listeners some insight, Union County (http://newlygreens.com/_content/uploads/Supporting_Documents_Purgen/UnionCountyAirStats.html), besides being among the most densely populated areas in the nation, is home to much Industry, Pharmaceutical manufacturing, and Petroleum refineries. The headquarters of companies like Merck, Lucent, Schering Plough, and Wakefern Food are there, as is the largest petroleum storage facility on the East Coast. Liberty International Airport, and Elizabeth Seaport the largest container cargo port on the East Coast are located in Union County as well.

Speaking with us today is Mr. Bradley Campbell, he is currently the chief spokesman for SCS Energy, a Massachusetts based company that is proposing to build a 750MW coal plant in Linden, NJ.  This is not your grandpa’s coal plant.  By that I mean the plant’s design calls for the newest technology under development in order to clean up what is generally thought of as the dirtiest of our conventional fossil fuel energy sources - coal.  Welcome to Newlygreens on the Morning Blend on WP88.7 fm Mr. Campbell.

C: To get us started can you tell us some of the significant ways the Purgen plant differs from a conventional coal plant?

G:Â COAL IS STILL DIRTY BEFORE IS GETS TO THE FRONT DOOR

This plant is cutting edge, it is designed to manage the toxic byproducts of burning coal more effectively, both air pollution and solid waste, and in that sense it is a certainly a cleaner coal plant.

But Purgen will still get it’s coal the old fashioned way; specifically mining and shipping operations by barge and rail will be performed in the same ways that have caused both health and environmental concerns for decades.  How do you respond to that?

Will any of the coal used at Purgen come from Mountaintop removal Mines?

__________________________________________________

C:  ENERGY NEEDED TO SEQUESTER CO2 – A HIDDEN COST

Out of the 750MW this plant can produce, a full third of that, 250MW, of that energy will be expended capturing, compressing, and pumping the CO2?  Another statistic I’ve heard is that for every four CCS-equipped power plants, we will need a fifth power plant just to run the pumps.  If a sustainable energy portfolio is our ultimate aim, as I think you agree it should be, is this really a sustainable approach to take?  Doesn’t this technology in fact suggest we would have to consume more coal more rapidly?

MR. CAMPBELL said that our estimate of the plant using 1/3rd of it’s generation to power sequestration operations was an exaggeration.  He then told us that the 750MW plant will use 250MW on site.  We would like to point out that this is  IN FACT THE 1/3rd we had estimated not AN exaggeration AS HE INDICATED.

The point we were trying to uncover here is that this plant, as efficient as it may be, burns more coal in order to deal with it’s coal-based pollution. This means pulling more coal out of the ground, creating more solid waste containing mercury, cadmium and sulfur as well as, more CO2 emissions, all so we can bury the CO2 emissions created.

As environmental groups and scientists call for us to move away from coal as a fuel source this plant is a boon to the coal industry in that it would call for us to burn more coal more rapidly.</itunes:summary>

Dude, Check out These Killer Reefs!

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/10/asr-reef-restoration-loved-by-surfers-and-sea-life-alike.php?dcitc=th_rss

For our underwater listeners, if your reef is dying, there is hope! ASR Ltd, a coral reef ecosystem recreation company, is making a new multi-purpose reef system (http://planetgreen.discovery.com/travel-outdoors/green-glossary-coral-reef.html) that will decrease beach erosion and give marine critters a new place to live.

Here's the kicker: these new reef systems make killer waves! With projects planned in the US, Europe and India, ASR plans to bring their surfing reef to communities around the world. Their current project in southern England is making progress already, and it's not even complete yet. Around this particular reef, the local towns have already noticed an increase in tourism, providing huge socio-economic benefits to the area.

Even the ocean can bring economic relief!

Don't Worry, We're All OK. NOT!

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/10/hannity-no-global-warming.php?dcitc=th_rss

Apparently, all of our efforts at informing the world about Global Warming were completely unnecessary. Why? Because Global Warming doesn't exist....according to Sean Hannity.

Taking partisanship to new, unrealistic heights, the FOX pundit covered a confrontation between a journalist and Al Gore at the Society of Environmental Journalist conference in Madison, WI. The journalist went after Gore over inconsistencies in his film "An Inconvenient Truth." Hannity, apparently trying to simplify the issue for his viewers, said,  "The debate's over. There's no global warming."

Well that would make our job easier, Mr. Hannity, except that Global Warming is completely real. Just to clear that up.

Brits Ahead in the Race to Decency

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article6867046.ece

From the New York Times, our friends in merry old England have once again used their eloquent words and charming accents to get the edge on us. In a recent survey, 74% of Brits said they would be willing to change their lifestyles in order to help get the planet back on track.

As far as we know, citizens of the U.S. have made no such statements.

The government in the U.K. has also implemented a new advertising campaign designed to make the Brits feel absolutely naughty about their wasteful habits. Maybe scare tactics about Global Warming would work here, but until the government really decides to crack down on American wastefulness, we'll never know.

Dropping Like Flies Redux

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/13/another-company-may-leave_n_319782.html

Last week we reported that several companies had dropped out of the United States Chamber of Commerce and very soon, another company could make its relationship with the Chamber bite the dust.

The Huffington Post reports that MacAndrews and Forbes Holdings, a company owned by the 18th richest man in America, Ronald Perelman, is seriously considering leaving the Chamber of Commerce because of its stance against the Clean Air Act.

MacAndrews and Forbes Holdings, which holds owns a significant amount of several complanies including Revlon, is currently holding internal discussions about whether or not to leave the Chamber of Commerce.

For those who don't remember, the Chamber of Commerce shot itself in the foot with an August court petition (http://www.nytimes.com/cwire/2009/08/25/25climatewire-chamber-threatens-lawsuit-if-epa-rejects-cli-62828.html) filed by the chamber demanding that the Environmental Protection Agency subject itself to an open debate over whether credible scientific evidence (http://www.uschamber.com/issues/index/environment/five_positions.htm) exists that global warming endangers public health.

For the vast majority of scientists and experts, it's a foregone conclusion (http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/) that Global Warming is not only bad for the globe, but most certainly the people in it.</itunes:summary>

Today's Stories:
U.S. Can Curb Global Warming and Lower Energy Costs (http://www.ucsusa.org/news/press_release/us-can-curb-global-warming-0242.html)
With the right policies in place, the United States could dramatically cut the heat-trapping emissions that cause global warming and, at the same time, lower energy costs in every region of the country, according to the findings of a two-year, peer-reviewed study by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS).

"We can protect the environment and Americans' pocketbooks by adopting the right policies," said UCS President Kevin Knobloch. "Our analysis shows we have the technology and the know-how to do this. What we now need is the political will."

UCS found that implementing a cap on emissions with a suite of energy and transportation policies would trigger investments in efficiency improvements, renewable energy technologies, clean vehicles, better transportation choices, and low-carbon technologies and fuels. A copy of the report can be found here: "Climate 2030: A National Blueprint for a Clean Energy Economy" (http://www.ucsusa.org/global_warming/solutions/big_picture_solutions/climate-2030-blueprint.html)
Twenty-nine species in more than 20 states may need federal protections to avoid extinction, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The agency said Tuesday that 20 plants, six snails, two insects and a fish may warrant protection under the Endangered Species Act but in-depth studies are needed first.

Among the 29 that federal officials said may need protection are the Yellowstone sand verbena, which only lives on the sandy beaches of Yellowstone Lake, several species of milkvetch in Wyoming, Utah and Colorado, and a Midwestern mollusk called the Frigid Ambersnail.

Diane Katzenberger, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokeswoman in Denver, said each of the species will now get a detailed review, including identification of its range, distribution and threats. Federal officials will then decide whether each needs to be protected as a threatened or endangered species.

The Fish and Wildlife Service said several of the 29 species being considered for protection could be affected by climate change, including the meltwater lednian stonefly that's only been found in Montana's Glacier National Park. The loss of glaciers in the park by 2030 as predicted by some scientists could jeopardize the fly's habitat, the agency said.
Aluminum Can Recycling Nears 55 Percent (http://earth911.com/blog/2009/08/18/aluminum-can-recycling-nears-55-percent/)
Earth 911

The Aluminum Association, Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) and the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) released recycling figures for 2008 showing that 54.2 percent of aluminum cans were recycled in 2008, making it once again the most commonly recycled beverage container.
The only curbside recyclable with a higher recycling rate is steel, which is buoyed by strong numbers for car and construction material recycling, to put it over 65 percent. Both these metals can be recycled continuously and can be turned back into metal containers and other metal products.

The energy saved by recycling a single aluminum can can power the average TV for 4 hours. It takes 95 percent less energy to manufacture a new can using recycled aluminum.

We are joined by Dr. Peter Montague, Director of the Environmental Research Foundation, and active member of the NJ Environmental Justice Alliance, a group focused on the disproportionate impacts of environmental pollution on people of color and lower income. From 1980-1983 he served as Project Administrator of the Hazardous Waste Research Program in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton University. In 1991-1992 he worked for Greenpeace USA as a Senior Research Analyst in the Toxics Reduction Campaign.

Today is part one of our interview with Peter about coal energy. He paints a vivid picture of a side of our power system few of us rarely see. Peter has a great understanding of the coal industry, I think you will find his insight fascinating.

Obama Begins Gingerly to Attempt to Get the Ball Rolling on Tougher EPA Regulations (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/01/science/earth/01epa.html?_r=1&ref=earth) - NY Times.com

The New York Times reports that President Barack Obama has finally decided he's tired of waiting for Congress to start regulating greenhouse gas emissions and has authorized the Environmental Protection Agency to do just that.

The EPA will soon regulate greenhouse gas emissions from hundreds of power plants and large industrial facilities. The proposed rules, which could take effect as early as 2011, would place the greatest burden on 400 power plants, new ones and those undergoing substantial renovation, by requiring them to prove that they have applied the best available technology to reduce emissions or face penalties.

Another one of Obama's almost adorably lofty goals will be to pass a Climate Bill this year. Let's see how that goes.

Progressive Green thinkers hope to have the world off of Toilet Paper someday soon (http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/10/stop-using-toilet-paper.php?dcitc=th_rss) - Treehugger.com

Treehugger recently brought alternative bathroom hygiene to our attention and soon, with any luck, toilet paper will only be used to tp people's houses on Mischief Night. Going without paper has proved to be healthier and it actually saves water. Still scieved out by it? Lots of people around the world get on just fine with TP.

Making a roll of toilet paper uses 1.5 pounds of wood, 37 gallons of water and 1.3 KWh of of electricity. In one day, Americans use 34 million rolls of TP which equates to 221,000 trees, 255 million gallons of water, and produces 88 million pounds of Greenhouse gases.

A new product called the Blue Bidet insists it can cut toilet paper use by 75% (the other 25% you would still need to dry your rump.) There is a toilet attachment model which only costs 69 bucks here in the US. It can reportedly be installed in a 1/2 hour. Still unconvinced? Wait for a rich friend to try it first, then make an assessment.

Just when you think it can't get any cooler being Green, Hip Hop makes an entrance (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/wires/2009/09/30/wyclef-timberland-team-up_ws_304366.html) - AP

Coming to us from the Associated Press, the Timbaland boot company is teaming up with rapper and former Fugees member Wyclef Jean to create a new line of eco-friendly footware. The 16-boot collection goes on sale in November. A cut of the profits will go to help the reforestation of Haiti, Wyclef's native country.

TOXIC NEW JERSEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FINALLY WINS RELIEF
Vapor Intrusion Controls May End Three-Year Ordeal at Atlantic Highlands

The students, staff and parents of a New Jersey elementary school suffering from an underground plume of toxic chemicals finally may be getting some help, according to documents released today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). A state-approved vapor intrusion plan will be in place next month at Atlantic Highlands Elementary School in Monmouth County on the northern New Jersey shore.

For more than three years, children and teachers have been exposed to unsafe indoor toxic air pollutants that exceed state vapor intrusion levels. In announcements this week, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) says that it will oversee installation of a "sub-slab vapor mitigation system" to reduce chemical exposures within school facilities.

"While this is good news, it is long past due because the state DEP again has fallen down on the job." stated New Jersey PEER Director Bill Wolfe, a former DEP analyst, who had been prodding the state to address the long-standing problem. "Even this new remedial action is the result of a voluntary negotiated settlement and not a state enforcement action."

The situation does call into question how seriously the NJ DEP actually takes it's own rhetoric about putting the health of children first.

Sept. 12th and 13th at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)

As we all prepare for another school year, concerned parents, teachers and health care providers are asking: what more can be done to reverse the record number of children being affected by Asthma, ADHD, Autism, Allergies, Obesity, Childhood Cancers etc?. Many of us are all too familiar with these statistics:
1 in 150 children in the US are being diagnosed with Autism. In New Jersey, it is 1 in 94.
The CDC reports: 1 in 6 children have either a behavioral, neurological, or developmental condition.
Cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease in children.
Asthma has more than doubled since 1980 and is the leading chronic disease among American children.
1 in 6 children are considered overweight.
1 in 400-500 children have diabetes.
Of course we don't have all of the answers, no one does....But on Saturday September 12th and Sunday September 13th on the campus of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) affordable and practical information on preventing and minimizing the symptoms associated with these conditions will be discussed. Seating is limited.....so don't delay in registering to hear incredible presenters including pediatricians, nutritionists, authors and environmentalists discuss strategies for improving the health, mood, behavior and attention of our kids. Additionally, there will be dozens of green exhibits, free tastings of organic food and coffee, live music, an interactive eco-art mural, education on composting and recycling, nature crafts and much more. Let's start the school year off right by listening to some of the most innovative thinkers of our time present information on greening our lives and improving the health, mood, attention and well being of our children!

As you may, or may not know, Greg and Connie are both certified presenters for a group called The Climate Project. We just returned from The Climate Project's North American Summit in Nashville, TN., where we spent 4 days with 500 fellow presenters listening to lectures from individuals like Mr. Al Gore, R.K. Pachauri, IPCC Chair; Don Henry Executive Director, Australian Conservation Foundation (a former guest on this program); Larry Schweiger, CEO, National Wildlife Federation; and Dr. David Suzuki host of PBS's The Nature of Things. We also took part in several workshops and information sessions centered around Climate Change.

Here is a summary of some of the take-aways from the conference:

R.K. Pachauri

	* Climate change will most adversely effect low-latitude, less developed nations. ie. the poor, marginalized people of the world. It will effect them largely because they lack the resources to adapt. In areas where it used to flood once every 15-20 years it will start to flood every 4-5. This does not give the people in these areas time to recover.
	* Sea Level Rise has historically occurred at a rate of 1.8mm/yr, it is now rising at a rate of 3.1mm/yr
	* The Arctic that has seen a 40% reduction in sea ice in the last 20 years is warming at a rate 2x as fast as the rest of the world.
	* Food Yield in Africa is expected to fall 50%, Central and Southern America 30%
	* Climate Change effects animal life as well. 1 million species will be lost if we don't act.
	* We can address Climate Change by curtailing the use of fossil fuels and undertaking reforestation on a grand scale. This will cost 3% of global GDP over the next 20 years. This means the growth we would expect to see by 2030 we will not see until 2031. A one year delay.

Mr. Gore

	* In the last 4 years Climate Project Presenters have given the Inconvenient Truth Slide show 50,000 times to 50 million people.
	* When we went to the moon in 1969 the average system engineer in the control room was 24. That means that in 1964 when President Kennedy issued the challenge to put a man on the moon the engineers were 18 at the time they heard that message.
	* Based on history we confuse the improbable with the impossible
	* The North Pole could be gone in the summer in a little as 5 years
	* The sum total of all waste, industrial, household, manufacturing works out as 141 lbs/per person/per day
	* The EPA was not able to provide a good reason for not regulating CO2 as a pollutant until now.
	* China is changing. It's budget for renewable energy currently far exceeds our own. They are moving forward.

Dr. David Suzuki

	* Humans are now the most abundant mammal on the planet. More humans than rabbits or mice.
	* Think about it: What is the collective impact of the billions of humans on earth?
	* Because there are so many of us, just the act of living, supplying our survival needs, makes us a geological force.
	* Foresight is what allowed Man to succeed. The ability to envision the future and make plans for it. It is what has the potential to save us now if we use credible information when making our plans.
	* What caused man to lose some of his/her gift of foresight? Perhaps the speed in which we now live and the abundance of information. A loss of connectedness.
	* Ecology - the study of home
	* Economics - the management of home. Put the "eco" back in economics.
	* Current economics is flawed for 2 reasons: The externalization of natural resources (they have no value on a balance sheet until they are used) and the myth of unlimited growth. Logging industry sees a forest as having no value until it is cut down and shipped.

Science Panel with: Dr. George Woodwell, Howard Frumpkin, CDC, and a Scientist from Harvard Public Health who's name I missed.

	* New York Times economist concludes, "It's time to save the planet".
	* Climate models often under estimate the effects. In every case, actual data matches, or is higher than the predictions of the models.

US Demand for Oil Shrinks
According to the American Petroleum Institute's (API) Monthly Statistical Report, U.S. gasoline demand (measured as deliveries) ticked up 2 percent for February, perhaps in response to lower prices. February diesel demand, however, plunged 12 percent and jet fuel demand dropped 6.6 percent from a year ago, reflecting the faltering economy. Overall, total oil-product demand fell 3 percent from a year ago, marking the lowest demand for a February since 1999. Despite the decrease, oil companies continue to yield record profits.
The European Wind Energy Conference :: March 16th-19th, 2009
Videos from Event (http://www.ewec2009.info/index.php?id=177&L=0)
The European Union's premire event for wind energy is taking place this week. Global leaders of the industry will meet in Marseille, France to discuss the future of the industry and pressure diplomats to finalize recovery plans to bring stability back into the sector. Here's Bruce Douglas, Chief Operating Officer, European Wind Energy Assoc. (soundbite)
Mama Aint No Fool :: Clean Your Plate
Over half of the food produced globally is lost, wasted or discarded according to a report from the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI). Worldwide demand for food is expected to grow steadily over the next 40 years threatening to run the planet dry. Here is Professor Jan Lundqvist of Stockholm International Water Institute at World Water Forum in Istanbul explaining why your mom was right when she said "Don't waste your food!". (Soundbite)

A related story: Libya is Drilling for Water in the Sahara (http://green.yahoo.com/news/afp/20090318/wl_mideast_afp/environmentwaterforumlibya.html)At a cost of 33 billion dollars and taking over 50 years, Libya is drilling for what amounts to prehistoric reserves of water under the Sahara to be pumped to coastal towns. Promising to be one of the largest engineering projects of all time, the water pipeline is two thirds complete and drawing much debate at the World Water Forum.
Tesla's 250th Delivery
Tesla Motors delivered its 250th car last Saturday. Lucky No. 250 was Dr. Rob Wilder, an academic and entrepreneur who created the first Index on Wall Street for energy efficiency and zero-carbon solutions.

Tesla is now producing approximately 20 cars per week, which will increase to 30 per week this summer. The Roadster remains the only highway-capable production electric vehicle of any kind for sale in the US or Europe. It does 0-60 in 3.9 seconds yet is twice as energy efficient as a Toyota Prius.

Tesla will unveil its Model S prototype sedan March 26, 2009. The Model S will likely be the world's first mass-produced, highway-capable EV when it rolls off the assembly line in late 2011. Coming in at just under $50k after tax rebates, the car is touted to have operating costs making it competitive with cheaper conventional cars.
Our Green By Design TV feature on the Tesla Roadster is here (http://newlygreens.com/podcasts/episode-3-auto-3-of-4/)
Facebook Educates Users
The popular social networking site Facebook might inadvertantly help educate users on energy efficiency. One of their applications which comes from Support.com is called Green Your PC. Once a user agrees to use it, they must download software which then tells them how energy efficient their computer is. Using recommendations from Energy Star and Carbonfund.org, the Green Your PC (http://apps.facebook.com/greenyourpc) application tracks your computer's energy use. '24' Goes Carbon-Neutral
Tree Hugger (http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/03/fox-tv-show-24-goes-carbon-neutral.php) The Fox TV series 24 has reportedly become carbon neutral. They first reduced their massive 2,179 ton carbon footprint 40% through efficiency measures like paperless script distribution, hybrid vehicles, and replacing tungsten field lighting with fluorescent or LED equivalents. The remaining 1,239 tons of CO2 were offset through investments in carbon credits, verified and certified by an independent third party to meet the standards of the World Resource Institute's Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Groups like the Environmental Media Association (http://www.ema-online.org/) have worked for years to green media production. At their site they have a list of criteria we have used to green the production of newlygreens.
Organic Dining Guide for College Campuses
The Organic Institute (http://www.theorganicinstitute.org/programs/16-goorganiconcampus) The guide published by The Organic Institute(available for download) (http://www.theorganicinstitute.org/downloads/doc_download/1-taste-the-change)opens giving readers an introduction to organic food. It goes on to include tips for working with food service, approaching issues like purchasing policy, working within budgetary constraints, and building relations with organic vendors. The guide also provides case examples from students at Yale, NYU, U.C. Berkeley and other universities who have successfully implemented these strategies to promote organic dining on campus.
The Carbon-Neutral Generation Shift the Power
Twelve thousand young leaders converged on Washington, D.C. to participate in Power Shift 09 (http://powershift09.org/node/912) over the weekend to demand that the President and Congress pass bold, just climate and energy policy in 2009 that dramatically reduces emissions, creates millions of green job and repowers America with 100% clean energy. Despite a snow storm that paralyzed much of the city, the four-day event concluded with a day full of hundreds of lobby visits and a rally with more than 3,000 youth on Capitol Hill. In just four years, the organizers of Power Shift ‘09, Energy Action Coalition, has grown to include 50 national organizations, over 700 local groups and tens of thousands of young people all working together to successfully fight dirty energy development and promote positive, clean energy solutions on campuses and communities around the country. For more information visit: www.powershift09.org
Fungus Fuel?
http://www.odemagazine.com/doc/61/myco-diesl-fungi-fuel/ Gliocladium roseum, a fungus found in the forests of northern Patagonia in South America, may offer an alternative to fossil fuels. G. roseum, recently unearthed during tests on ulmo trees in the region, releases gases that contain a complex mixture of hydrocarbons that become explosive when burned. The discovery has been coined "myco-diesel". Traditionally, biodiesel must be converted into sugar before fuel is made. By contrast, myco-diesel can start with waste since G. roseum grows on cellulose, the most abundant compound on Earth. Cellulose—found in grass cuttings, leaves and straw, for example—can be used to grow the fungus, without the need for fermentation.
Green hits your washing machine!
http://www.odemagazine.com/doc/60/a-greenwash-you-can-believe-in/ Scientists in the U.K.have created a way to cut down on the waste of drinkable water by washing machines. In the U.K. alone, some 455 billion liters (12 million gallons) of water go down the drain each day thanks to washing machines. But Stephen Burkinshaw and his team at Leeds University have developed a washing machine that only needs 23 milliliters (a cup) of water per load—about 2 percent of the usual dose!</itunes:summary>

Today we have with us our collegue, Rob Burke, reluctant activist, and owner of the Wayne Auto Spa - eco-friendly car wash. Â Rob gives us an update on some exciting and encouraging news for clean energy in the Garden State. Â More info on his blog (http://www.wayneautospa.com/).

In the interview we ask listeners to contact representitives in support of state-wide renwable energy zoning laws. Â These are the NJ lawmakers who can make this happen:

Sen. Bob Smith, Environment Committee Chair:Â senbsmith@njleg.org
Assemblyman Upendra Chivikula, Chair, Telecommunications & Environment Committee:AsmChivukula@njleg.org
Assemblyman John McKeon, Chair, Environment & Solid Waste Committee,AsmMcKeon@njleg.org

Â

THE LATEST NEWS ON THIS REQUEST... (3/10/09)
For all of our NJ people, an update on recent legislation.... A3062/S1303 Defines "inherently beneficial use" for purposes of zoning use variance and specifically includes facilities that supply electrical energy produced from wind, solar or photovoltaic technologies. This bill was favorably unanimously passed out of the Assembly Housing and Local Government Committee (AHO) yesterday afternoon. It apparently was approved thru the Senate so if the Assembly passes it, then next stop the Governor.  Â

A copy of the bill can be found at:Â
http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2008/Bills/S1500/1303_I1.PDF (http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2008/Bills/S1500/1303_I1.PDF)

Thank you everyone who made calls, this is tremendous!!!

Show Summary
Here is video excerpts from our previously posted audio interview with author, Sophie Uliano. Our apologies for doubling up on content, it's the first time we tried video taping a spot on the radio show. Given the time constraints of the TV show we had to edit things down. Consider it a behind the scenes look at the radio show if nothing else ;) Â Advice so nice we had to air it twice...
We're joined today by Sophie Uliano, author of Gorgeously Green (http://www.gorgeouslygreen.com). While the book has lots of useful facts and strategies we focus today on skin care and beauty products. Sophie has provided us with a Red List and and Orange List of the chemicals to watch for in what you currently use.
Get the Red Out
The Red List items are the real nasties. Items proven to have immediate detrimental health effects. Products containing these chemicals should be discontinued immediately:

Coal Tar
Fragrance - (An ambiguous term under which many really harmful chemicals can hide)
Hydroquinone
Aluminum
Triclosan
P-Phenylenediaminr
Lead and Mercury
Cumulatively Orange
The Orange List these products have been shown to have adverse effects when used over time. They are more widely found than those in the Red List. Products with these ingredients are "safe" to be used up, but you should look to replace these products with an alternative that does not contain Orange List items on your next trip to the store.

Mineral Oils
Parabens
Phthalates
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES)
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)
Formaldehyde-Producing Preservatives
Talc
Acrylates and Methacrylates
Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40)
Tocopherol Acetate
Phenonip
Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats)
Cationic Surfactants
Benzyl Alcohol
Silicone Derived Emollients
Carbomer 934, 940, 941. 960, 961C

Please visit the Gorgeously Green website (http://www.gorgeouslygreen.com) for lore tips and media from Sophie Uliano.

You can catch the Newlygreens live with Risa on the Morning Blend every other Thursday morning from 8am-9am at wpradio887.org, (http://wpradio887.org/) or also on the radio in North Jersey at 88.7FM</itunes:summary>

		<itunes:summary>[part 2 of 3] Organic Wine

Show Summary
A nice cross-section of organic, fair trade. and biodynamic wines for you to try and some resources for finding more.

First a  disclaimer, we are no wine aficionados, but we do like our evening wine.  Today we wanted to learn how to make more informed selections so we went to the Liquid Learning Center at Joe Canals in Iselin, NJ (http://joecanals.com/iselin-woodbridge.html)for a lesson in Organic Wine tasting.  Store Manager, Sean Woods shares his knowledge of wine making and the difference between:

Sustainable - Growing by organic standards but not yet certified by the CCOF (http://www.ccof.org/certification.php)

Organic - Grown organically, or made using grapes purchased from a certified organic farm.

Biodynamic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biodynamic_wine) - The kitchen sink...  Biodynamic practices also forego the use of pesticides, but there is also the addition of a good deal of ritual and even mystisism, all with the intention of optimizing the balance between flavorful fruit and long-term soil quality.

We tried 6 wines from four catagories:

Chardonnay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sauvignon_blanc) - The most widely planted and most complex white grape.
Sauvignon Blanc (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sauvignon_blanc) - A lighter, fresh, "Summer" white
Cabernet Sauvignon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabernet_sauvignon) - A bold, full-bodied and complex red
Merlot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merlot) - A smoother and more fruit laden red
Meritage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meritage) - special limited production wines that blend Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot yielding interesting, balanced, wines. (like Bordeaux)

Today we sampled wines from:
Melania (http://www.melaniawines.com/) - Chile - Organic, FairTrade ($10)
Chardonnay - Grassy and green with a good amount of citrus.  Reflective of a full and many-layered chardonnay grape
Cabernet Sauvignon - Dark and earthy with very strong black pepper spice.  The fruit was plumb and oak.

Frogs Leap (http://www.frogsleap.com/html/sauv.html)- California - Organic ($20)
Sauvignon Blanc - Lemongrass and wet stone

Ehlers Estate (http://www.ehlersestate.com/index.cfm?method=pages.showPage&pageid=bf8ee411-1b78-7bfe-4c56-d189f28a7e2e) - California - Organic, Biodynamic ($35)
Merlot - Blackberry, cocoa, earth

Long Meadow Ranch (http://www.longmeadowranch.com/wine/index.wine.html) - California - Organic ($40)
Cabernet Sauvignon - Blackberry, thyme, cherry, chocolate, tobacco

Benziger (http://www.benziger.com/farming/index.php)- California - Organic, Biodynamic ($70)
Tribute - Meritage - Figs, butterscotch, cocoa, smooth

My favorite was the Benziger Tribute, I'm a fan of reds but I find many are more peppery than I like.  The Tribute was very smooth and reminded me of Opus One.

Bear in mind that in the wine world "organic" carries a stigma of "cheap" or "substandard", a seeming carryover of wine snobbery and uneducated customers.  As a result many of the growers who grow organically or biodynamically because they recognise the inherent benifit to flavor and livelyhood, do not indicate that they have committed to these practices on the bottle for fear of hurting sales.  So what is an aspiring organic wine customer to do?  Leg work unfortunately.  We've tried to give you a jumpstart with the wines listed here.  A good wine store should have someone like Sean on hand to help guide you, don't be afraid to ask.

A complete listing of wine makers and distributors can be found at the CCOF.org site (http://www.ccof.org/cgi-bin/organicdirectory_search.cgi) but it is a rather unusable interface for a quick search to try one evening.

Here's some Google searches to get you started:

		<itunes:summary>Montclair, NJ :: Coal Action :: Jan. 22, 2009

Last night I attended the first Power Past Coal action in NJ.  Organized by Ted Glick (http://www.tedglick.com/) long time environmental activist, the small group was well received by passers-by (honking their horns in solidarity) and marks the beginning of what promises to be an exciting year of environmental activism around the nation. In attendance were members of Essex County Greens (http://www.essexcountygreens.org)
Blue Wave NJ (http://www.bluewavenj.org/index.htm)
Lakeland Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (http://www.luuf.org/)
And other just plain motivated folks.
Learn about actions in your area, or schedule one yourself at powerpastcoal.org (http://www.powerpastcoal.org)
Students should also check out Powershift 2009 (http://www.powershift09.org/splash) for more actions around coal in 2009.</itunes:summary>
