Our Back Story

Why Produce a TV Show?

The Story Leading Up to NGTV TV:
Kaizen Productions was founded by husband and wife, Greg and Connie. Greg and Connie always had a respect for nature, but no one would have called them “Green”. They recycled their bottles and cans and might occasionally camp out or go canoing but that was about the sum of their environmental streak. Greg, a muscle car enthusiast, used to say with some pride, “I never owned a car that wasn’t at least a V8.” When Connie worked in NYC for MTV Networks she used to commute in her own car, favoring it to mass transit although they lived just a few blocks from the train. So how is it that this unlikely pair now finds themselves hosting a show about going green?

Sometimes it seems the course of one’s life changes in an instant. Sometimes influences accumulate over time, each building upon the last until old conventions no longer hold true. For Greg and Connie both theories apply. Greg and Connie met performing in a rock band on the NJ club scene. After a reasonably successful seven-year run and an even more successful personal relationship they began to think of starting a family. This ultimately led to the adoption of their son. Adopted through the same agency through which Connie’s parents had adopted her as a baby, years before. The arrival of their son began to bring about a change in priorities.

As happens to so many parents Greg and Connie started to shift their focus from the short term, to the future. This shift led them away from music and toward their careers, providing security but leaving a creative void. Greg took his background as an audio recording engineer to work in the broadcast division of a local university, and Connie left the uncertainty of MTV for the stability a leading financial firm. All the while there was a growing sense of uneasiness…

Greg’s father, a professor of Environmental Design architecture at Syracuse University used to say to him, “Our culture seems to be predicated on growth at the expense of natural resources. It is unreasonable to think that this can go on forever.” Connie watched TV stories of frogs mysteriously disappearing from Staten Island habitats, perplexing environmental scientists and prompting everyone to ask, “What’s happening to the frogs?” These influences were ringing in their ears as they began to discuss ways to become more personally involved in the community.

…And then came their tipping point…
Scientific data of something being amiss started to find it’s way to the pair. An Inconvenient Truth brought the inter-relatedness of the data together with new clairity. They left the theater with an obligation defined, and set out to learn what they could do to take part in the changes that would be necessary to ensure the future held as much promise for their son, and future generations, as it had for them. But what they found was that all the information that was available was so overwhelming it stopped them in their tracks. It was then, that one of Greg’s college professors planted a seed… “There is such an abundance of information available at this moment in history that individuals or businesses that can distill this information down to smaller, accurate, and actionable chunks for targeted audiences have tremendous value in today’s world. This is what is meant when we describe today’s market as The Information Age”

And there it was. The sincere interest in the well-being of future generations, an obligation to take part in finding solutions for an environmental crisis, the identification of a specific need for actionable information, an outlet for untapped creative energies, a background in performance, years of training and experience in the technical aspects of television production, and both holding degrees in Business Management. What else could they possibly do if not Kaizen Productions and its premier project the Newly Greens TV?
