Greg and Connie meet with Montclair’s environmental coordinator, Gray Russell. They also discover that making it easy to make the green choice is the key to actually taking the action. Here are some of the things the town of Montclair and our hosts are doing to live more sustainably….

In 2005 Montclair changed all of its municipal traffic lights from halogen bulbs to LED bulbs saving them 90% of energy use and $10,000/year.

Motion Detector lighting has been installed in all of Montclair’s municipal buildings to conserve energy.

They purchased six new municipal vehicles that use compressed natural gas for fuel, which lowers emissions. And they switched their municipal truck fleet (70+) from regular diesel fuel to bio-diesel B 20, which is bio-diesel fuel mixed in with regular diesel fuel.

The Town also conducted a comprehensive energy audit and assessment for all of its municipal buildings.

In an effort to make the green choice the easy choice, Greg and Connie make sure there is a paper only bin and plastic/bottle bin in every room that might generate that particular waste. If at the moment of decision the bin is available there is a greater chance that the right choice will be made.

Greg is convinced Connie broke the dining room light switch because each time he turns it off, she turns it back on again. (Ask Connie and she’ll tell you that’s not true!) But regardless of the cause, they have now replaced the old one with a motion sensor switch, which will save money and energy.
