Greensprouts :: School’s Out. Now What?

School is finishing up in the coming weeks for many students across the U.S. So what are you going to do with these kids over the summer? And how can you keep green about it?

Here are some summer fun tips:

1. Treat your kids to water-based snacks. Don’t let the kids sit around and eat pizza rolls and chips this summer. Make some homemade ice pops or serve up some water-heavy fruits like watermelons. You could even make smoothies if you’re in a d-i-y mood. Keeps the kids happy, healthy, hydrated and cool, plus it doesn’t take up much electricity.

2. Bring on the butterflies! Young kids especially love butterflies. Plant butterfly weeds, clover, lavender, yarrow, mints, thistle or sage in your yard to attract them. Get some nets and maybe a butterfly guide. You’ll be amazed how many butterflies your kids can catch and learn about!

3. Grill green. Even though propane is bad for the environment, some charcoals produce 105 times more carbon monoxide than burning propane, so shop wisely! There are “green” charcoals, such as Wicked Good Charcoal, which is basically super dense carbonized lump wood. Supposedly it burns longer and cleaner. Either way, read the labels on grilling products before you buy them and compare.

4. Join the Great American Backyard Campout. The National Wildlife Federation started this initiative to get families to camp out in their yards and enjoy the outdoors. If you don’t like going far away to camp, conserve gas and money and camp in the backyard. It’s safer in case of emergencies but can still get you in touch with nature.

5. Forgo the mall for the yard. Instead of escaping to the air-conditioned, overpriced malls this summer, check out your neighborhood. Yard sale season is upon is. Teach your kids the art of bargaining, and get them cheaper toys than you would have at the mall. Plus buying a used product keeps it out of a landfill, and that’s always a good thing!

This Saturday, June 19 will be the second annual SolarDay, so happy SolarDay!
